The Magic of the Musicals at Swansea Grand Theatre

The West End heads west over the coming months, as two internationally acclaimed musicals open their doors to Swansea audiences for a limited time. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic musical Evita heads to Swansea Grand between Tuesday 10th and Saturday 14th April, while Crazy For You follows with a run of retro charm between Tuesday 1st and Saturday 5th May.

With a popularity which seems to be ever on the increase, the must-see musical Evita has seen a string of professional tours, worldwide productions and a major 1996 film of the musical starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas. Telling the story of Eva Perón, wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Peron, the stageshow follows Eva’s journey from humble beginnings through to extraordinary wealth, power and iconic status and features some of the most iconic songs in musical theatre: Don’t Cry For Me Argentina; On This Night of a Thousand Stars and Another Suitcase in Another Hall.

For those looking for lively vintage glamour and romance, Crazy For You captures some of the same all-singing, all-dancing glitz and romance that the multi Oscar-winning La La Land brought to the big screen in 2016.

This high energy, high kicking and gloriously glamorous Watermill Theatre production has been described as the ultimate feel-good musical and stars Strictly Come Dancing winner Tom Chambers and West End and TV star Claire Sweeney, with Charlotte Wakefield as ‘Polly’ (Sound of Music, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang).

Tom Chambers has described why he’s so excited to bring the tour to Swansea.

“It is absolutely my favourite all time musical and has the absolutely perfect balance of humour, story and singing. There are so many musicals that are heavy on just one element but this show has the perfect combination of everything. The best thing about touring is being able to bring something to you rather than you having to make the epic journey to London. It is really important to be able to make sure people can see these shows in their own areas.”

Crazy For You charts the troubled love story of Bobby, son of a wealthy New York banking family and frustrated Broadway hoofer, and Polly, daughter of the proprietor of a failing theatre in Deadrock, Nevada. Sent to close the theatre down, Bobby falls for Polly and decides to save the theatre by putting on a show.
