The Plas Y Brenin National Outdoor Centre in Snowdonia and the University of Edinburgh have collaborated in the UK’s first “pracademic partnership” – a joint effort aiming to revolutionise the education of outdoor professionals.
The new programme will rest on a new BA (Hons) course in Adventure Sports Coaching, extra provision for postgraduate research to improve outdoor teaching, and the creation of new research centre for Adventure Sport based at Plas Y Brenin.
Staple activities like hillwalking, rock climbing, kayaking, canoeing and mountain biking will all fall within the partnership’s provision. Exact details are yet to emerge, but Ruth Hall, Chief Executive of Plas Y Brenin, said: “We’ve seen a significant growth in participation, with greater numbers of people getting involved in outdoor activities. We need to encourage individuals to enter the profession, and we’re delighted to be partnering with the University of Edinburgh.”
