A Penarth man is running 100 half marathons in a year for Bobath Wales Children’s Therapy Centre despite sustaining two skull fractures.
Paul Harris was six months into his half marathon challenge when he came off his bike and suffered a head injury.
“I was unconscious on the street for a while. Luckily, there were trainee doctors from Cardiff Medical School nearby who were able to help me and ring for an ambulance.”
With determination and dedication to the cause, the See Wales Tours owner was back running two months later and is now on half marathon number 54.
The centre Paul is raising money for provides specialist therapy and treatment to children living with cerebral palsy but also gives families the support they need too. Cerebral palsy is one of the most common disabilities in children and affects an estimated 1,800 children in Wales. It affects how children move, speak and interact with others.
Paul said the families at the centre are very inspiring. “Children go in there unable to move and they come out able to do things they couldn’t before.”
He said that he always struggled with running before this challenge and certainly wasn’t what you’d call ‘a runner’. “I ran the Cardiff Half Marathon a few years ago and found it really tough. However, when I decided to give it another go, I discovered I could run really well. I’m a bit behind schedule after my fall but I’m building it up and looking forward to raising the money for Bobath Wales.”
Caroline Davies, fundraiser at Bobath Wales, would like to thank Paul for taking on his challenge and fundraising for the charity. “We couldn’t be more proud of Paul for running his 100 half marathons and raising money for us. He’s an inspiration and we can’t wait to see him cross the finish line of his final half marathon next March, on St David’s Day. We’ll all be there ready to cheer him on!”
The donation page is open if you’d like to help Paul reach his £10,000 target for Bobath Wales. If you’d like to make a donation, please visit:http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Paul100BobathWales.
