Goodbye to Nigel Owens

The legendary rugby ref finally hung up his whistle in December after officiating a world record 100th international test, bringing down the curtain on a career that included the 2015 World Cup Final and an MBE. Mynyddcerrig -born Owens made history on and off the pitch when he came out as gay in 2007, and was named Gay Sports Personality of the Decade by Stonewall in 2015.

The great and good of Welsh, British and world rugby queued up to pay homage. Jonathan Davies OBE said he was “the best for many reasons,”; All Blacks legend Richie McCaw credited his “great feel for the game,” and World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont called him “one of the greats”.
