Fun, Family Summer at Techniquest

Techniquest has long been a firm favourite with families from across Wales and beyond and a visit during the summer holidays is a must.
Set in the heart of Cardiff Bay, the hands-on nature of the science discovery centre has meant that children have always been able to learn through play and bring science to life under their fingertips.

Now it’s bigger and better than ever, with a large, airy extension which includes over 50 brand new, interactive exhibits. Many of these new displays are pretty tech-savvy so not only young families, but also older children, teenagers and adults can now become immersed in a fascinating world of science and technology. With different zones in the new build dedicated to space, the environment, bio-medical science, chemistry and world issues, there’s a whole universe of fascinating facts, mind-boggling machines, skills-tests, physical challenges and mentally absorbing tasks to explore.

Virtual operating table.

You can create your own fireworks, launch a rocket, dock a spacecraft or control a submersible ROV; craft volcanoes and coastlines with sand, battle a hurricane, sculpt a water-drop, carry out a virtual operation or dance with luminescent waves. Learn more about your heart, your lungs and the air that you breathe. Discover how robots are being used to deep clean using light, in the temporary exhibition space on the first floor. Set your adrenaline running on the big silver slide – and no, it’s not just for children…Set alongside the new exhibits are many old favourites, in what is fondly described as the Retro Section. Although some of the older pieces have been retired or moved on to new homes, you’ll still find a water-play area, the hot air balloon, the giant piano, pipes of pan, probability pattern and many more.

In the Science Theatre you can watch a show about dinosaurs (age 5+ recommended), but spaces are very limited so advance booking for this is essential.

Build your own firework display.

And if you want to take a little of your Techniquest experience home with you, you can add an xTag to your booking for just £1 that will let you save photos, videos and information from your visit, that you can download and share at your leisure.

Techniquest is now open from 10am to 5pm, 7 days a week until the end of the summer holidays. Booking in advance is advised, via the website where you’ll also find lots more information that will help you to plan your visit.
