A chime sounds as the door opens, revealing an irresistible display of colourful wool-lined walls and jars of unique and unusual buttons, if you knit or crochet this truly is a sweet shop full of temptation and intrigue.
The shop is not dissimilar to a room you might find in a traditional country house, offering an escape from the city into a world of wool – this is Swansea Bay Yarns. Morgan, the owner, gives us an insight into the shop’s journey, from its opening to its 5th anniversary on Saturday 29th June.
So what inspired you to open a shop? Did you have any experience?
I had no experience at all, just a massive love of wool and knitting! The decision grew out of battling cancer for a year, and not relishing the return to a job I had come to loathe. There used to be a lovely wool shop in the Mumbles so I knew it was a viable venture.
Were you worried about online competition? What does a physical wool shop offer?
The colours online are never accurate and most people like to feel wool before they buy. I knew I wanted tables and chairs for comfortable browsing, a welcoming ambience to help customers marry up the perfect yarn for any project. It’s not just a transaction, it’s an experience.
How has the shop grown since its opening?
Well, there’s a lot more wool! I’ve held workshops and events and they’ve helped to create a community for wool addicts! Slowly but surely, buttons have become another passion of mine!
Wow, that’s a lot to celebrate! Have you got anything planned?
Yes! I’m going to have a party on the day with tea, cakes and a bit of fizz. A 20% off sale from 10.30 to 12.30 is my way of saying thank you to everyone. It will be a fab fun day with all welcome!
